Piece of Cake

If I had to bake a cake to survive, I would starve. Baking is too much like chemistry. Chemistry was an elective class in my high school. Good thing. Otherwise, I would almost certainly have never graduated. What does baking have to do with photography? Well, in the digital realm, like chemistry, very little.

But there is a connection to this post. This new website is finally live. Importing my old posts, learning the tricks of this new theme, importing and displaying my photos and generally learning my way around the software involved all felt way too much like chemistry. It also felt humiliating, given all the promotion about how easy it would be. I consider myself reasonably tech savvy. Certainly, more so than most of my similar aged friends who routinely ask me to diagnose or solve their tech glitches. And, those younger than me routinely ask me for advice about the latest technology. I hardly ever need to read an owner’s manual. But this exercise has me reevaluating my techie credentials. Apparently, when it comes to web hosting technology I’m turning into my mother. She, who is now 87, never figured out email or personal computers or cell phones or digital anything, really. She did own a CD player for a time. I think she knew how to use it. Though it did seem every time I was home for the holidays and she wanted to listen to music, she would ask me to, “Put something on.”

But this is a photography blog which means posts should more or less involve photos. In honor of this self-targeted rant, I’m posting two shots composed by Comet. Yes, he who walks on four legs. Comet is not just an observer of my photographic endeavors, he is an almost 70 lb, 11-month-old impatient Golden-doodle who is not in favor of sitting quietly while I take photographs that force pause our long walks.

These are two examples of his contributions. I have many more like these. What is his technique? He waits until I am in the midst of shooting and then tugs at his leash in my hand. I almost hesitate to post them for fear that in their abstraction he will find a larger and more dedicated following than I will. It is not an idle fear. His Instagram page boasts more than 3x the followers of my Instagram page and he doesn’t even work at it.
